Homecoming Week brought out a blast from the past with dress days revolving around the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and a week filled of fun activities, including relay races, trivia, and other games!  After a week of points being distributed to the classes, the seniors came out on top and won a free pizza party! 

Campus Minister and religion teacher Deacon Robb got the school year off on the right foot as he blessed every inch of the inside and outside of the school.  Here’s to a great 2018-19 school year!

Phase Two of the Peter P. Kamsyz ’46 Finance Center renovation was completed just before the beginning of the school year.  New flooring and furnishings were added to the room to truly enhance the learning experience for our students.  Economics and Personal Finance are currently being taught in this room this semester, and we look forward to future generations of Lancers being able to utilize the technology that makes this room so unique and dynamic.

Three St. Mary’s High School students will be spending their summer learning about surgical robotics.  Junior Jeffrey Zoyhofski and seniors Nicholas Pronobis and Megan White have been selected to participate in the Junior Robotic Surgery Challenge (JRSC) at Roswell Park Cancer Institute of Buffalo.

Zoyhofski, White, and Pronobis were selected from a highly competitive field of candidates, between the ages of 16-19 and from across the country, in order to participate in the program. For the St. Mary’s group, the decision to apply to Roswell stemmed from a collective desire to learn more about the field of medicine at an early age: “I am fascinated by the medical field as a whole, but wanted the opportunity to be exposed to different fields before I decide on a college major,” said Zoyhofsi.

St. Mary’s AP Biology teacher Mrs. Kathleen Walh-Henshaw is extremely proud of these students: “The application process alone for the robotics program is extremely rigorous,” Walh-Henshaw said. “This whole experience is a wonderful opportunity for these students to really expand their knowledge in the science and medical fields to see if this is a path they want to explore in college and beyond as well as learn the intricacies of robotic surgery, which is an incredibly fascinating field.”

Through the JRSC, students will be exposed to the Fundamental Skills of Robotic Surgery curriculum- also known as the primary method used to train robot-assisted surgeons at Roswell Park.  In addition to this exposure, students will have access to workshops and job fairs to really get a feel for the opportunities that await them in the fields of science, technology, and medicine.  At the end of the course, students will receive a certificate of completion in Introduction to Robotic Surgery.

All three St. Mary’s students are excited for the opportunity and hope to get a glimpse of what their future careers may hold. “I really want to immerse myself into the world of medicine and be reassured that it’s something I can see myself doing in the future,” Pronobis said.  White agrees, “Right now, I am looking to go into PT or sports medicine, so this opportunity with Roswell is the perfect chance to see different things and get more experience.”

This year, St. Mary’s participated in the Lancaster 4th of July Parade. Members of Lancer First Responders and St. Mary’s Wrestling took the Lancer bus out on the parade route with Mr. Weiss, throwing candy to our many supporters on a hot summer day. Thank you to all those who cheered us on!

After all the exams and classes have ended, the freshmen and sophomores headed off for their annual year-end trip to Darien Lake. From roller coasters and water rides to a picnic lunch and midway games, just another day of creating memories at SMH.
