George Morgan is a beloved member of the Lancer Family, as he volunteers his time helping out with athletics and is just a “go-to” guy for things around the building. George then collects bottles and cans after lunches and sporting events. Like all of us, George has been missing the days of full hallways and gym bleachers. So, the St. Mary’s and Lancaster communities really came out over the past week to show George what it means to be a member of this family, donating thousands of bottles and cans to the cause. Members of the Class of 2020 have been accepted into some pretty amazing colleges and universities. Take a look!

Congratulations are in order for a couple of very special seniors! Jeffrey Zoyhofski has been named the Class of 2020’s valedictorian and Jillian Szeluga has been named the class salutatorian.
Jeffrey will go on to continue his academic career at Cornell University to study Applied Economics and Management and Jillian will head to Daemen College to begin her journey to become a Physician’s Assistant.
Congratulations to both of these Lancers!

Here’s your daily dose of smiles! Prior to the pandemic, St. Mary’s art students participated in The Memory Project, creating portraits of children living as refugees in Malaysia. As part of a coordinated effort among high school art students throughout the country, students created handmade portraits for children living in refugee camps, orphanages, and in similar situations around the world. Right before the world took a pause due to COVID-19, the portraits were able to go out on a plane from the U.S. to Malaysia. As you can see from this video, the portraits were a once-in-a-lifetime gift for the children who received them. Definitely worth the watch!

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues on, St. Mary’s students are taking on distance learning. The St. Mary’s faculty and staff had prepared for weeks leading up to the pandemic in case these steps were necessary, so we are incredibly fortunate for their planning and dedication to ensure lesson plans were in place and accommodations to their current teaching methods were made in order to most effectively communicate the material to their students.

St. Mary’s follows a collegiate model, which works on a weekly cycle. All material is assigned to students on Monday, which they then have the week to complete, with assignments due on Sunday evenings. Teachers then offer office hours and virtual classes via Google Classroom for students to attend.

It has been an adjustment, but one all students and faculty members are taking in stride!

Happy Pi Day! The St. Mary’s Math Department organized a pie drive, collecting frozen pizzas and pies for local food pantries. We collected hundreds of pies thanks to the generosity of our students and families.

Our Head of School Kevin Kelleher and Dean of Academic Affairs Keith Junik were both featured in Buffalo Business First’s “Who’s Who of Education.” They join fellow school leaders on the list from around the area on both a high school and collegiate level. See more of the list here.
